Sealed Alcohol Ink Plate


I had hoped to post about sealing last week's plate post on Thursday, but it was so rainy and dark that it took until the weekend to get good photos. So you'll get them on your regularly scheduled post day, but I have a new project that I'll post on Thursday!


This plate turned out pretty neat, so I knew I wanted to seal it. The best option for decorative dinnerware is the dishwasher safe mod podge. I've used it on a few crafts now and it does work, it just takes a month to cure. It's also a bit thicker and takes longer to dry than regular mod podge. I opted to use a paint brush with soft bristles over my usual mod podge applicator of a foam brush because I was worried that brush strokes would be very visible on the glass. I applied three thin coats allowing plenty of time between to dry.


If you look at the plate's back, you can easily see the sealer, but if you set it on a table or even hold it up in the sun, it's pretty much invisible--which means it turned out perfect!

    I tried using that modgepodge on a bowl i inked, but it smeared everything. How did you get the design to stay?

      It works the best if you let the ink dry for at least 24 hours. I brush it on lightly--not too much glue--and it might smear a little, but usually only if I try to seal it the same day I've inked it.

    Is there anything else otherthan modge podge to seal the glass and say ceramic tiles? Would a clear resin work obviously not in the dishwasher but for handwashing?

      I have no experience with resin (because it's pretty expensive, requires special equipment to work with, and is not food safe), but theoretically, yes, you could use a resin to seal alcohol ink on glass. I did a bunch of tests on spray acrylics and found that the Krylon clear sprays that are designed for artists (found in the art supply sections of craft stores) work the best on glass and are minimally reactant.       Food safe resin is readily available now. Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast is food safe.

A while back I picked up some small white bowls from Big Lots ( these look similar ) with a nice satin finish. I already inked one bowl using the flame method , but I still have a few bowls left, so I decided to give one the plastic wrap treatment. I got out my craft mat and some alcohol inks . Splatter Resist Alcohol Ink Tile

I still have some ceramic tiles left from my last run to the hardware store, so when I remembered I had saved the contact paper heart from my Valentine's Day Glass Etching project, I knew exactly what I wanted to try. I grabbed some bright alcohol inks , canned air , a 6 inch ceramic tile , and my contact paper heart. I originally cut it out free hand by folding the contact paper, so it doesn't have to be perfect, but I'm sure if you have a cutting machine you could use that to make whatever shape you'd like in contact paper or vinyl. I peeled back the paper backing and applied the heart to the middle of the tile (as best as I could eyeball it). Then I rubbed down the edges of the contact paper. Alcohol Ink Washer Necklaces

I received a package of alcohol inks for Christmas and then bought a second set with a 50% off coupon at Michael's.  I've used them now to make coasters and to decorate some candle holders .  I was just getting my sea legs with these inks to begin with.  I applied the ink directly onto the surfaces and played around with rubbing alcohol as a blending solution.  But I thought it was high time that I used an applicator to use them the way they were intended.  Of course, the applicator is just a stamp with some velcro on it and it costs 6+ dollars....not to mention buying the pre-cut pieces of felt. So I figured I'd make my own.  I was very much in a use what you've got mentality, so I grabbed a scrap piece of wood and a couple of strips of velcro (hook and loop tape).  I used the hook side and lined two pieces up next to each other.  Luckily they were just the right width.
