Alcohol Ink Valentine's Plate with Vinyl Resist

I found this glass plate from Dollar Tree in my craft stash and thought it would be fun to get back to doing some inking projects.

I printed a heart template that I found online and it out of copy paper. Then I found a piece of vinyl to use as a resist. If you don't have any permanent vinyl in your craft stash, you can use contact paper or painter's tape, but permanent vinyl will have the least bleed through.

I traced my heart template onto the paper backing of the vinyl and used a scissors to cut it out. You could use a cutting machine, too, but this was easier and faster than dragging out and setting up my Silhouette.

I peeled the paper backing off of my vinyl heart and positioned it as close to center as I could and then rubbed down the edges. I got out my craft mat, my red and magenta alcohol inks, Pinata brass, some rubbing alcohol, a can of air, and a hand bulb.

I started by dripping a drop or two of ink and a drop or two of rubbing alcohol and blowing it around.

I continued to layer different shades of red and magenta with some of the Pinata brass to get a base of ink. I switched between using the hand bulb blower and the canned air.

This was my first project testing out some new needle tip bottles for my rubbing alcohol. It worked a lot more easily than using pipettes and eye droppers.

I continued to drip ink until the plate was mostly covered. At this point I thought I was pretty much done. I carefully lifted it up to take a peak at the front of the plate. I was pleased to see the vinyl wasn't bleeding along the edges (yay!) but there was a lot of clear areas without ink or with very light ink.

Since I knew I wanted the heart to stand out against the ink, I kept on adding ink around the edge of the plate and blowing it around (I mostly stopped using the rubbing alcohol at the end). When I felt like it was pretty solid with color, I set it aside to dry. There was quite a bit of ink on the plate, so I left it to dry for a couple of hours.

After the plate was dry to the touch, I carefully peeled off the vinyl. It came off cleanly and there was zero bleed through. That never happens. There's always a tiny bit I have to try to clean up with a q-tip, but this time it came out perfect!

I was really please with the saturation of colors and how cleanly the heart came out on the plate!

So, to make sure the plate lasts, I sealed it with a few coats of Kamar Varnish followed by a quick coat of Triple Thick Glaze. Hopefully that will be enough sealer that I can wipe the plate clean with out ink loss if I decide to use it for more than just decoration.

I'm so happy with how this plate turned out. If you want to see more of my Valentine's Day crafts, check them out here: Sarah Jane's Craft Blog Valentine's Day Craft Collection.
