Beginner Friendly Silhouette Cameo Welcome Sign Project
The inspiration for this project was a cute sign blank from Dollar Tree. When I saw the black sign with the checked fabric border in the craft aisle, I immediately thought it was adorable and needed some white vinyl.
Last week, I cut a bunch of designs out of a square of white vinyl. I used one of the designs to make last week's house-shaped sign. While I was adding designs from my library of free Silhouette designs, I made the welcome graphic by using the text icon to type "welcome" and then changing the text's font until I found one I liked.
To create a cut pattern out of text in Design Studio: After you've selected your font, highlight the text and right-click. Then select "weld." The weld option connects parts of the design together for cutting. Sometimes after welding text, it will separate the text into several sections. If that happens, you can highlight and select "group." After the text has been welded and grouped, you can move it around and resize it as needed.
After the designs were arranged, I used the standard glossy vinyl settings but bumped up the force to 11 because I was using Silhouette branded vinyl that is quite thick. I cut a 12-inch square from my roll of vinyl and stuck it to the cutting mat. You can totally cut straight from the roll, but the cutting mat makes it easier to load the vinyl straightly into the machine (I have an old Cameo, so maybe the new ones are better about that) and keeps it from rolling up on the backside of the machine while cutting.
After the designs were cut on the Cameo, I grabbed my weeding tool and carefully peeled the outer layer of vinyl off the design. This was a really simple design with fairly thick lettering, so I only had to pluck out a couple of small pieces of vinyl from inside the lettering.
After the design was weeded and all the excess vinyl was removed, I cut a piece of transfer tape the size of the design.
I peeled the backing off of the transfer tape and applied it to the top of the vinyl. Then I rubbed the transfer tape down carefully over the vinyl to make sure the letters stuck to the tape.
Then I peeled the paper backing off of the vinyl decal with the tape attached.
Then I did my best to center the decal and stick it onto the sign. Once again, I rubbed the decal down to make sure all of the letters had stuck before peeling the transfer tape off of the sign.
And that's it! I was pleased with how simple and easy this sign was to make. I hope Dollar Tree has more of these unique sign blanks in stock!
